NEW DELHI: Doordarshan has brought cheers for India with its documentary on sign language bagging an UNESCO award at a function held online in Kuala Lumpur.
‘DEAFinitely Leading The Way’, produced by Doordarshan, has won the award under ‘Together For Peace’ initiative by UNESCO.
Pradeep Agnihotri, Doordarshan programme executive in New Delhi who directed the documentary in 2019, told TOI, “People with special needs are dedicated and focused on their approach. They just need right training to excel.”
“Sign language should be made a part of educational curriculum like other languages,” he added.

‘Definitely Leading The Way’ talks about the journey of Anshul. His parents didn’t know their child was special until he turned four months. Anshul studied at a regular school till Class VI before the parents realised that he had special needs. Anshul was then taken to a special school.
Recently, UNESCO, in cooperation with Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), had called for inspiring stories of people and communities overcoming differences from 33 countries across five continents.
The competition was open across Radio, TV and digital platforms.
